Hitting lessons & player development

Let’s put a scare into some baseballs together

My name is Matt Gagne and I look forward to working with you.

I live on Long Island and am available to give individual or group lessons to players and teams.

My teaching style and methods have been heavily influenced by my friends and mentors at 108 Performance in Tennessee and at Fuel Factory Sports in Arizona.

Their brilliance has shaped my approach: Give players the space to discover who they are and how they move best. Give them the right nudges to 1) challenge their movement and 2) control their movement — and show them why both are important.

Because hitting is mental and physical, my goal is to simplify complexity and turn the baseball adage “working through failure” into a different thought: learning to trust yourself.

The cues, stances, swing feels and drills are unique to every hitter and often change for everyone over time. There is no cookie-cutter approach to hitting. There is no greater proof of this than kids learning to make adjustments as they go through growth spurts at various stages.

Before pivoting into the world of player development, I wrote for the New York Daily News and Sports Illustrated and covered MLB from spring training to the World Series. I’ve seen up close the importance of hitters learning to trust their process rather than using outcomes they can’t control (good or bad) to judge themselves.

I’ve been around high-level baseball my entire life, which explains how I first got into sportswriting. My relentless curiosity as a journalist and my access to world-class trainers has put me in a position to help kids who love baseball — kids of all ages and ability levels — become better hitters while also acquiring skills that translate into life beyond the game.

I am certified in Youth Baseball Development by Driveline.

I coach with the Long Island Elite travel baseball program.

I am CPR and AED certified.

I am a member of, and insured through, the American Baseball Coaches Association.

I look forward to working with you and helping you become the kind of hitter that gives pitchers nightmares.
